The zebrafish cerebellar rhombic lip is spatially patterned in producing granule cell populations of different functional compartments

Abstract: The upper rhombic lip, a prominent germinal zone of the cerebellum, was recently demonstrated to generate different neuronal cell types over time from spatial subdomains. We have characterized the differentiation of the upper rhombic lip derived granule cell population in stable GFP-transgenic zebrafish in the context of zebrafish cerebellar morphogenesis. Time-lapse analysis followed by individual granule cell tracing demonstrates that the zebrafish upper rhombic lip is spatially patterned along its mediolate… Show more

“…S3D,E). In agreement with previous studies on cerebellar neurogenesis (Volkmann et al, 2008;Bae et al, 2009;Kaslin et al, 2013), recombination between 1 and 3 days postfertilisation resulted in a multitude of GFP-labelled cells in all cell layers of the cerebellum, including PV + Purkinje cells, Golgi cells and granule cells (n=12 fish, 10/12 recombined fish; Fig. 4D,E).…”

“…It is worth noting that, in the early larva, the parallel fibers run perpendicular to the anteroposterior axis in the posterior domain of the cerebellum (Volkmann et al, 2008;Bae et al, 2009). This is where the Purkinje cells extend a primary dendrite and develop dendritic spines that have a postsynaptic marker (8 dpf, data not shown) and possibly contact the parallel fibers.…”

“…Expression in the nervous system is still most evident in the olfactory epithelium and cerebellum ( Fig. 3C), where neurons are undergoing activity-dependent survival and maturation (Yoshida and Mishina, 2005;Volkmann et al, 2008). In contrast, expression appears diminished in the midbrain and hindbrain (Fig.…”
