In this paper, the characteristics of the long-term precipitation series at Athens have been statistically analyzed. This study covers both the history and the analysis of the data. The ten-year mean amounts, the monthly and annual amounts averaged over the intervals , the mean number of hours of precipitation and the precipitation intensity are given. The analysis of long-term time series of climatic data (in particular precipitation) is a useful tool for the study of past climate. Different statistical techniques are used in order to depict monthly, seasonal and annual variations, as well as trends, periodicities and recurrence intervals of the amount, intensity and number of precipitation days. The analysis reveals many interesting characteristics. These characteristics of the precipitation regime are extended to a time scale from seasonal variation to a semi-secular trend. The study of such long-term series may be helpful not only in practical applications of rainfall, but also for explaining the possible physical or anthropogenic mechanisms of chmatxc fluctuations and tendencies. The series of precipitation at Athens is one of the longest in south-eastern Europe.

“…It is known that, due to the very high levels of energy consumption and friction in cities, significant amount of waste heat is stored in the walls of buildings, streets, etc., which gets released during the night, thereby making the nights warmer. Colacino and Rovelli (1983), from an analysis of mean annual surface air temperatures in Rome during 1782 to 1975, found that the increasing trend in urban temperatures was more conspicuous in the minimum temperatures rather than in the maximum temperatures (see also, Colacino and Levagini, 1982). Local temperature is thus one of the major climatic elements to record the environmental changes brought about by industrialization and urbanization.…”

Local temperature is one of the major climatic elements to record the changes in the atmospheric environment brought about by industrialization and urbanization, Long-term variations of seasonal and annual surface air temperature at six major industrial cities of India (Calcutta, Bombay, Madras, Bangalore, Pune and Delhi) have been studied, using data for the past 86 to 112 yr. Comparative analysis of the temperature data of six nonindustrial stations has also been done. The long-term change in the temperature has been evaluated by linear trend. Calcutta, Bombay and Bangalore have shown significant warming trend, while Delhi has shown a cooling trend. The trends at Madras and Pune are not significant. The nonindustrial stations did not show significant trends. In general, there was either a cooling tendency or cessation of warming, after the late 1950s at most of the industrial cities.

India is a developing country and urbanization is one of the major concern for human health and environment in India. No doubt urbanization changes human life but it has adverse effect on temperature. Due to land use land cover change, there is an impact on temperature. In this paper we have made an attempt to study temperature trend over last 110 years in india.
