The visual preferences for forest regeneration and field afforestation - four case studies in Finland

Abstract: The overall aim of this dissertation was to study the public's preferences for forest regeneration fellings and field afforestations, as well as to find out the relations of these preferences to landscape management instructions, to ecological healthiness, and to the contemporary theories for predicting landscape preferences. “…Three simultaneous phases of development were noticeable: the intensification of forestry operations, the increase in recreational needs, and the development of the environmental movement (Hellström & Reunala 1995). To reduce conflicts, several administrators of urban woodland began to make changes in silvicultural practices (Hellström 1996(Hellström , 2001 and recreational values were implemented in forestry policy, forest planning and forest management (Kardell 1978, Hytönen 1995, Gundersen 2005, Karjalainen 2006). These adaptations significantly reduced the conflict level (Hellström 2001).…”

“…Mattsson & Li 1994, Mattsson et al 1995, Holgén et al 2000. Several studies show that logging residue decreases the visual quality of the forests or felling areas (Heino 1974, Hultman 1983, Aasetre 1993, Kardell et al 1977, Kardell & Lindhagen 1998, Lindhagen & Hörnsten 2000, Karjalainen 2006, Gundersen & Christensen 2008. The effects of logging residue are reduced as time passes and when there is enough vegetation to hide the woody debris.…”
