The incorporation of a tie-line between two areas may be beneficial in two ways. First, the reserve capacity of the assisting area support to the assisted area, and second, the number of Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) requirements will become smaller for complete observability of the interconnected grid. The objective function is formulated to integrate the observability and reliability analysis for the two interconnected synchrophasor networks. The effect of Zero Injection Bus (ZIB) is included in the observability constraints to reduce the number of PMUs deployed in the system. The number of optimal PMU deployments will be greater for two interconnected systems in comparison with a single area. Therefore, interconnected systems become more vulnerable to cyber risk. The paper discusses the cumulative analysis of system observability and reliability during an anomaly situation that occurs with a PMU device due to a cyber-attack. The reliability indices Interconnected System Load Interruption Probability (ISLIP) and Interconnected System Demand Not Supplied (ISDNS) are evaluated when an anomaly occurs with optimally deployed PMU in the network by including and excluding the effect of ZIB. By doing so, the most reliable location for PMU deployment can be obtained for both the area. Reliability Test System (RTS)-24 bus is used for each area to modify the test system by incorporating tie-lines between them.

Introduction: Aspects of power system protection which contributes to mal-operations and blackouts can be improved by supervision of system behavior and response based analysis rather than condition-based or event-based analysis using wide area measurements based on synchrophasor technology. The paper explores the application of micro-Phasor Measurement Unit for time synchronized real-time distribution network monitoring and agile decision support schemes for system prognosis and control. Case description: The scheme is proposed as part of a project on "Power System Voltage Stability Analysis using synchrophasors in Distribution System of Kerala Grid" at Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd. An actual grid occurrence during the severe tropical cyclone Ockhi, is considered as the base case which motivated the work. Discussion and evaluation: A voltage stability index (VSI) based special protection scheme (SPS) for radial distribution network at a proposed smart city is presented in the present study. The proposed special protection scheme on actual implementation can use data from proposed local micro-Phasor Measurement Unit. The PMU is proposed to be placed at one of the key nodes of the distribution system network in the city. Conclusion: The VSI is derived using local phasor values and is used to initiate a Special Protection Scheme for N-1 contingency at the key node, so as to ensure availability of the most essential feeder which provides supply to a hospital campus housing several health institutes of prime importance. The voltage stability index derived is tested and SPS is validated using real-time grid data.

Transient Stability Enhancement Using a Wide-Area Controlled SVC: An HIL Validation Approach

This paper presents a control scheme of a wide-area controlled static VAr compensator (WAC-SVC) and its real-time implementation in a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation scheme with three control objectives: (1) to increase the critical clearing time, (2) to damp the power oscillations, and (3) to minimize the maximum line current. The proposed control scheme considers a correction strategy to compensate the delays up to 200 ms. In addition to this, a generator tripping scheme based on synchrophasor measurements to determine the proximity to the loss of synchronism is proposed. A delay compensation algorithm based on polynomial approximations is also developed. The proposed WAC-SVC is experimentally validated using a Real-Time Digital Simulator platform (RTDS), industrial communication protocols, a commercial device for PMU-based control implementations, and digital relays with PMU capability. The real-time simulation results confirm its effectiveness and feasibility in real industrial applications. Furthermore, practical guidelines to implement this kind of control schemes are provided.
