The Variability of the Concentration of Bioaerosols Above the Chambers of Biological Wastewater Treatment

Abstract: The article presents the results of research over microorganisms (psychrophilic and mesophilic bacteria and microscopic fungi) found in wastewater in denitrification and nitrification chambers and specifies the proportion of these microorganisms in bioaerosol at various levels above wastewater level (20, 50 and 100 cm). In the denitrification chamber (anoxic) in 1 cm3 of sewage there were on average 30.35 · 106 CFU of mesophilic bacteria, 72.88 · 106 CFU of psychrophilic bacteria, and 37.3 · 105 CFU of microsc… Show more

“…However, comparing the results from this study with the reports of other Polish authors, the determined concentrations of bioaerosols were at low levels [Korzeniowska et The total number of bacteria and fungi determined in the outdoor air allows classifying the air quality as moderately polluted to non-polluted. Seasonal changes in the concentration of the determined bioaresols are similar to the results of the works of other researchers [Michałkiewicz et al, 2018]. Under temperate climate conditions, the highest concentrations will occur in the summer months and the lowest in winter.…”

“…Bioaerosols are airborne particles, very small in size ranging from 0.001 to 100 µm. It comprises of both living and non-living entity such as bacteria, fungi, virus, pollen and also metabolic products such as endotoxin or mycotoxin (Michałkiewicz et al, 2018). When bioaerosols get entered inside the respiratory tracks and deep into lungs, it prompts several adverse health effects, including allergies, pneumonia, rhinitis, asthma, tuberculosis, bronchitis and cardiovascular diseases (Breza-Boruta 2016; Douglas et al 2017).…”

“…Wastewater biological treatment broadly uses aeration, mixing and compressing to intensify the growth and proliferation of the microorganisms. Wastewater turbulences, intensive flow rate and aeration are considered to promote bioaerosol formation and release into the wastewater treatment plant's atmosphere [5,6].…”
