The Use of Virtual Surgical Planning in Total Facial Skeletal Reconstruction of Treacher Collins Syndrome: A Case Report

Abstract: Facial skeletal reconstruction of patients with severe Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) requires correction of both midface and mandibular deficiencies. Implementing virtual surgical planning can provide an accurate three-dimensional analysis of craniofacial abnormalities, creating calvarial donors that match the anatomy of the desired malar augmentation and facilitating bimaxillary movements, positioning, and fixation in orthognathic surgery. We present a case of an 18-year-old patient with TCS, who underwent … Show more

“…Of the 26 PRS-authored publications, 9–34 6 (23.1%) publications were authored by PIs located in the United States, whereas the remainder of the PIs were based outside the United States (Supplementary Digital Content, Table 3, http://links.lww.com/SCS/D937). Although VSP was used for preoperative surgical planning in all papers, 12 studies (46.2%) further used VSP to fabricate intraoperative guides or splints and 6 studies (23.1%) superimposed pre- and post-surgery VSP models to determine VSP accuracy.…”

“…Meanwhile, the application of digital technology enables the design of individualized orbital zygomatic prostheses that are more in line with the developmental characteristics of different patients and achieve better shape effects. 8 In addition to the dysplasia or defect of the orbitozygomatic bone, the soft tissue in the midface area also has hypoplasia to varying degrees in these patients, so simple reconstruction of the orbitozygomatic region sometimes does not bring significant results. Although some patients have orbitozygomatic dysplasia, the anterior one third of the zygomatic arch remains, the collapse of the orbitozygomatic region is not serious, so that the patient's midface can be significantly improved by temporal expansion flap 9 and autologous fat transplantation with reduced trauma.…”

“…Instead, Medpore material, with good histocompatibility, no rejection and no recurrence, easy to shape, is an ideal artificial material. Meanwhile, the application of digital technology enables the design of individualized orbital zygomatic prostheses that are more in line with the developmental characteristics of different patients and achieve better shape effects 8…”

“…As digital techniques for cranial modeling continue to advance and become more readily available, increased utilization of VSP for cases of skeletal facial reconstruction and complex craniosynostosis repair is anticipated. 6,15,16 It is in this setting that we will discuss our experience with the use of VSP for cases of complex craniosynostosis while also presenting our comparative analysis to our cohort of complex cases completed without the use of VSP.…”
