Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary protein levels on pullet development and egg production performance of local hens. One hundred sixty local chicken pullets were used in this study. During the rearing period, the pullets were divided randomly at a density of 16 chicks per cage in rearing pens. During week 1, all birds were fed a starter diet containing 19% crude protein (CP). The experimental treatments consisted of two protein sequence regimens. The semi-constant protein sequence consisted of feeding the birds a 16% protein diet during weeks 2 to 14, and a 13% protein diet during weeks 15-20. The second regimen was a decreasing protein sequence (conventional method) consisting of feeding 19, 16, and 13% crude protein diets during weeks 2 through 6, 7 through 14, and 15 through 20, respectively. During the laying period, weeks 21 through 40, half of the groups in each of the protein sequence treatments were fed 19% CP and the other half 17.5% CP diets. Body weight and feed intake of the local pullets were similar in both protein sequence treatments at weeks six, fourteen, and twenty during the rearing period. During the laying period, egg production of hens fed the decreasing protein sequence during the rearing period was numerically higher than the semiconstant protein sequence at weeks 21 through 40, but not significantly different. Body weight and feed intake were not significantly affected by the dietary protein sequence. In addition, egg weight during weeks 21-24 and 29-40 was not affected by rearing diets, but hens fed the decreasing protein sequence diet had significantly (P<. 05) higher egg weight than the other rearing protein diet during weeks 25-28. The main effect of the dietary protein level in the layer diet on egg weight was significantly higher in hens fed the higher protein layer diet (19% CP) than the lower protein layer diet during weeks 21-24 and 33-40 of the laying period. The data showed that raising layer dietary levels to 19% during the laying period also increased average egg size.

The pullet phase is an important stage in the development of laying hens when the development of organs, including reproductive organs and bones, is rapid. However, in recent years, few studies have focused on this crucial stage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a dietary crude protein (CP) regimen during the rearing period (9-21 weeks (wks) of age) on pullet development and the subsequent performance, egg quality, and bone quality of Hy-Line Brown laying hens. A total of 256 pullets were randomly assigned to two treatments. Each treatment was replicated eight times with 16 pullets per replicate (n = 8), which were fed ad libitum using either of the two CP regimens: (1) 14%-18% CP (fed with 14% and 18% CP from 9-17 wks and 18-21 wks, respectively); (2) 16% CP (fed with 16% CP from 9-21 wks of age). At 21 wks of age, eight birds per treatment were randomly selected to evaluate body composition and ovarian development. For quality analysis, eggs were collected at 28, 32, 36, and 70 wks. At 70 wks of age, eight hens per treatment were selected to evaluate bone quality. There were no treatment differences in pullet performance, body composition, and ovarian development at 21 wks. The dietary CP regimen during the rearing period (9-21 wks) did not influence laying performance during the laying period.There were no treatment differences in tibial and femoral quality at 70 wks. Egg quality results showed an inconsistent trend. It was concluded that the pullets fed with the low CP grower diet (14%) during the pullet period and a high CP pre-lay diet (18%) from 18-21 wks of age developed properly and had satisfactory laying performance.However, the rearing diet did not enhance bone quality.

This experiment was carried out on the Matrouh and Silver Montazah strains which used 120 females + 12 males for each strain to study the effect of interaction between number of day light hours and dietary protein levels on productive, physiological and immunological performance. The groups were as follows: The first group was taken 17 hours lighting /day + 16% dietary protein (control group); the second group was taken 17 hours lighting /day + 18% dietary protein; the third group was taken 15 hours lighting /day + 16% dietary protein; The fourth group was taken 15 hours lighting /day + 18% dietary protein. Theobtained results indicated that the group fed 18% dietary protein gave the lower feed intake and improved feed conversion compared with groups which take 16% dietary protein. The group reared under 17 h lighting /day + 16% dietary protein gave the best egg weight and egg mass compared with groups rearing under 15 h lighting /day and groups had18% dietary protein gave the high egg weight, egg mass and egg production % compared with those take 16% dietary protein. the higher values of egg shell thickness was for group fed 18% dietary protein compared with 16% dietary protein and the groups of Matrouh strain under 17 h lighting /day and 18% and 16% dietary protein and Silver Montazah under 17 h lighting /day and 18% dietary protein gave the higher fertility (%).Matrouh strain reared under 17 h lighting /day and using 18% dietary protein gave the higher values of PCV%, WBC's, lymphocytes, heterophils and H/L ratio. The groups take 17 h dietary /day gave the higher blood total protein level and total cholesterol compared with the groups take 15 h dietary /day. It could be concluded that the best of treated groups was under 17 hour light/day plus preferred that diets containing 18% crude protein for improving productive, physiological and immunological performance for these developed strains in Egypt.
