Abstract: This study shows, in a multiple-level approach, the responses of Salvinia auriculata to Cd pollution in aquatic ecosystems. S. auriculata ramets were cultivated in nutrient solution and subjected to five treatments with Cd for ten days. At the end of the experiment, the number of new ramets and the dry biomass were determined. For ultrastructural observations, the leaves of S. auriculata were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. At the end of the experiment, the p… Show more

“…Some S. biloba plants present in all treatments presented changes in color and texture, marginal lesions on the floating leaves, reduction of biomass as well as high mortality, as reported in literature for other Salvinia species (Guimarães et al, 2006;Wolff et al, 2009Wolff et al, , 2012. Symptoms like these are typical of the toxicity of metals to macrophytes, some however, may be specific to each species (Guimarães et al, 2012).…”

“…Studies on S. biloba are scarce, however, results obtained with other species of the same genus report the effectiveness of these macrophytes as regards to the removal of toxic metals from aquatic biota (Dhir et al, 2008;Guimarães et al, 2012;Wolff et al, 2009Wolff et al, , 2012. These elements resulting from industrial, agricultural, mining and domestic sewage activities directly impact the water bodies when they do not receive appropriate treatment and are inadequately disposed of in the environment.…”

“…The characterisation of biomarkers of toxicity is essential, since bioindicators are, most of the time, more efficient than the physical and chemical parameters normally measured in the field. However, there is still little information regarding structural and ultrastructural changes in plants that are induced by heavy metals (Favas et al, 2012;Wolff et al, 2012).…”

“…Secondary metabolite production in plants is affected by environmental factors such as salt (Kasrati et al, 2014;Yu et al, 2015), water (Németh-Zámbori et al, 2016), heavy metals (Sosa et al, 2016), and secondary metabolite content decreases in parallel with plant growth and development (Islam et al, 2016). On the other hand, high concentrations of Cd in the soil negatively affects trichomes' structural integrity (Wolff et al, 2012). Changes in lemon balms growth and development reduces the amount of EO synthesizing structures especially in the leaves (Moradkhani et al, 2010).…”
