The ubiquitous hyaluronan: Functionally implicated in the oviduct?

Abstract: Hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid) is a simple, non-antigenic, non-sulphated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) present everywhere in the extracellular compartments of the body. Noteworthy, it is highly conserved phylogenetically, from sauropsida to mammals; and plays a plethora of roles from embryonic/fetal development to adult physiological and pathological events, including tumor development. In reproduction, hyaluronan has proven related to initial events as sperm survival, build-up of the sperm reservoir in the oviduct, r… Show more

“…In addition, various carbohydrate sulfotransferases genes (CHST7, CHST3 and CHST12), involved in the catalysis of the sulfation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) 45 were also overrepresented in our study. The non-sulfated GAG hyaluronan is produced by oviduct epithelial cells to act multipurposely, being related to the capture of spermatozoa during their storage in the isthmus reservoir by adhering to sperm surface membrane, to sperm capacitation, acrosome reaction and fertilization 32,38,46,47 . We identified mostly downregulated targets implicated in the synthesis of HA or its receptors in the Infundibular segment; HAS2, HYAL2, VCAN, HMMR, SPAM1 after Mating, and of VCAN, HAPLN1, HABP4 in the P1-AI group.…”

“…The presence of CD44 in the EVs of the sperm‐free seminal plasma play a crucial role in most mammals, considering that prostasomes are recruited by and attached to spermatozoa in response to early capacitation events in the uterus and oviduct, and stimulate secondary pathways related to hypermotility and acrosome reaction, when approaching the oocyte (Aalberts et al, ). In addition, it is known that rooster spermatozoa do not complete maturation in the epididymis (Froman & Kirby, ), thus we hypothesized about a role for CD44 in this process, as documented in mammals (Rodriguez‐Martinez et al, ). However, no CD44 binding by Western blotting was found in any of the SF samples from the three chicken breeds studied.…”

“…In vitro selection of spermatozoa to improve IVF is unlikely to correspond to events occurring in vivo [19]. Under in vivo conditions, progressively motile spermatozoa are selected during their journey through the genital tract [26,27] and most SP is removed from the sperm surface by interaction with the female (washing with intraluminal fluid, etc.) before arrival to the site of fertilization.…”
