The use of transplanters to carry out the planting process has been known widely. Reviews related to productivity performance from these tools are closely related to topographic conditions, soil types, land area, plant species, community culture, the purpose of use, and the technology included as an added value to the tool. Previous studies found various levels of productivity, socio-economic studies, and studies related to users’ demographic characteristics. This study tries to provide an overview of the use of transplanters with a limited scale and on a specific type of soil, studied more comprehensively by considering the community’s demographic characteristics. The results showed that economically, using a transplanter with a limited land area had no significant difference from the traditional method on the soil characteristics. This decision-making was allegedly motivated by the demographic characteristics of farmers. Using a descriptive approach involving 40 respondents, this study found that transplanters do not differ in economic productivity performance on a limited scale.

Numerous benefits of the system of rice intensification (SRI) have been documented since SRI was popularized 30 years ago. To date, more than 58 rice growing countries are practicing SRI, covering around 4 million ha of paddy fields and involving more than 10 million farmers. Many paddy farmers shy away from practicing SRI due to extreme labour endurance and number of labors required, especially during transplanting and frequent weeding. The manual transplanting technique to ensure proper root establishment of the seedlings, makes SRI less appealing to many paddy farmers. Furthermore, the transplanting shock is a problem arises from manual transplanting technique needs to be solved that resulted to damaged roots causing delays in crop establishment and reducing productivity. Mechanized transplanting of the young single seedlings into the paddy fields at a wider plantation area eliminates drudgery and enables better exposure to sunlight, water, air, and nutrients. This paper presents a solution to overcome the problem of transplanting shock and the back-breaking manual transplanting, which was achieved by containing the roots of each seedling in a grid of isolated cells. Several designs of the isolated cells to contain the root system were fabricated and tested. These include using aluminum square cells, polyvinyl chloride pipe circular cells, biodegradable grid cells, biodegradable conical capsules, and germinated seeds sowed in a grid without isolated cells. The typical grid cell size was 15 mm by 15 mm with a depth of each cell varied from 40 mm to 60 mm. The most promising design was one with single seedlings raised in bio-degradable capsules arranged close together to fit the conventional rice seedling tray of 300 mm by 600 mm and can accommodate 684 capsules per tray. Upon reaching 2-3 leaf stage, the seedlings with undisturbed roots are ready to be transplanted into the paddy fields using the currently available rice transplante rs.

The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) revolutionizes rice cultivation through innovative practices. It is a methodology that enhances rice yields by optimizing plant growth and resource utilization. This study, conducted in 2023 at TNAU, Coimbatore, India, focuses on the optimization of nursery tray configurations for enhanced seedlings per pick during rice transplantation, contributing to more efficient SRI cultivation. The selection of nursery trays plays a crucial role in determining seedling distribution, impacting crop yield and agricultural efficiency. Through the manipulation of seed density, depth of filling, and tray configuration, the research aims to improve the seedlings' per-pick outcome during mechanized transplantation. The investigation involves 12 tray combinations with varying seed density (40 gm, 60 gm, 80 gm, and 100 gm) and depth of fillings with different heights in tray (15 mm, 20 mm, and 25 mm). Seedling growth parameters are meticulously assessed, including shoot length and root length to evaluate tray efficacy. The study also analyzes transplanter compatibility and the influence of seed density and depth of filling on seedling growth. Results highlight the tray configuration with an 80 gm seed density and 25 mm soil height as optimal, offering 1-3 seedlings per pick and minimal missing hills less than 1%. The endeavor to minimize picks per hill through precise tray combinations represents a crucial step in addressing the challenges of modern agriculture and shaping a more sustainable and productive future.
