“…In 1 set of experiments, addition of the iron-deferoxamine complex, ferrioxamine, was found to have no effect on TIBC of serum that did not contain free iron using a magnesium carbonate colorimetric method. 7 These results are consistent with our results for the alumina column TIBC methods. In another set of experiments, the addition of deferoxamine to serum that did not contain any free iron increased the TIBC when a magnesium carbonate separation step was used in conjunction with an electrochemical method that used alcoholic hydrochloric acid.…”

“…These findings are in contrast to the situation observed with methods that use magnesium carbonate to remove unbound iron, in which increasing the amount of magnesium carbonate used can correct the problem. 7 The ability of the alumina column to retain nontransferrin-bound iron seems to be reduced by the presence of serum proteins, particularly albumin. As iron concentrations exceed the transferrin-associated binding capacity, weak interactions between excess iron and serum proteins may compete with iron-binding sites on alumina particles and prevent removal of non-transferrin-bound iron by the alumina columns.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…On the other hand, DFX-Fe measurement of sFe was certainly influenced by [17,18]. Although there should be differences in the biological behavior of DFO and DFX, our present results indicated that careful attention should be paid when these markers are observed during iron chelation therapy with DFX.…”

“…We obtained baseline TIBC to ensure there was no baseline difference in iron homeostasis between the two groups, because TIBC has been shown previously to be falsely elevated following acute iron poisoning due to a laboratory aberration. 12 A retrospective, seven-year analysis of more than 74,000 exposures to chewable multivitamins with iron failed to identify any cases of severe iron toxicity.…”
