Abstract: Aims. We investigate the height dependence of the magnetic field of a sunspot, which has been until now a controversial issue. Methods. Full-Stokes profiles of a sunspot, derived from infrared spectro-polarimetric measurements, were investigated. The magnetic field strength, inclination and azimuth were obtained using an inversion code. The results from two different spectral lines deliver the height dependence of the magnetic vector field. Vertical current densities and helicities as well as the vertical deri… Show more

“…Such a signature is only found outside the sunspot. This agrees with earlier findings of Giovanelli (1980); Giovanelli & Jones (1982); Solanki et al (1992Solanki et al ( , 1994Solanki et al ( , 1999; Adams et al (1993); Balthasar & Gömöry (2008), but partly differs from the results of Westendorp Plaza et al (2001b), who found a canopy-like structure starting from the middle of the penumbra and continuing outside the penumbral boundary of their spot. A similar canopy-like structure to that found by Westendorp Plaza et al (2001b) was reported more recently by Borrero & Ichimoto (2011).…”

“…The sunspot canopies inferred from the 1.56 µm lines by Solanki et al (1992Solanki et al ( , 1994 were deduced using another technique, and not from the explicit heightdependent inversion of spectral lines. Although not so clearly marked, a canopy structure outside the sunspot boundary, similar to that obtained here, was seen by Balthasar & Gömöry (2008).…”

“…2). It will be interesting to see, if this corrugated boundary is related to the magnetic canopy often observed around pores, which extends well beyond the photometric boundary of the pores (e.g., Keppens & Martinez Pillet 1996;Leka & Steiner 2001;Balthasar & Gömöry 2008). The most striking feature in the average image is the granular pattern of G-band brightenings, which survives the averaging process.…”
