The threadfin bream Nemipterus randalli (Perciformes: Nemipteridae) in the eastern Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: A total of 30 specimens (73-95 mm standard length) of Nemipterus randalli were collected along the Lebanon coast. This species, a Lessepsian migrant previously misidentified as Nemipterus japonicus, appears to be well established in the Levantine basin of the Mediterranean Sea. The small size and immature status of the specimens of N. randalli collected from the Lebanon coast indicate recent successful recruitment.

“…The record of Nemipterus japonicus (Bloch, 1791) of GOLANI & SONIN (2006) is invalid as it is considered a misidentification of N. randalli Russell, 1986 (for a full account, see BILECENO LU & RUSSELL, in press; LELLI et al, in press). …”

“…We consider these an artefact, a consequence of the inadequate sampling and ichthyology study efforts conducted in those early years. Of the ten alien fish species that have been recorded in Israel and (Golani, 2000;Bilecenoglu et al, 2002;Golani & Fine, 2002;Gökoglu et al, 2004Gökoglu et al, , 2008Yilmaz et al, 2004;Akyol et al, 2005;Golani & Levy, 2005;Golani & Sonin, 2006;Goren & Galil 2006;Lelli, et al, 2008). The presently reported records of A. smithi from Turkey, one year after it was reported from Israel , and the record of A. queketti in Israel shortly after it was found in Turkey (Eryilmaz & Dalyan, 2006), are two additional cases.…”
