Abstract: Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA)--a naturally occurring amino acid that is a product of protein breakdown--is released into the cytoplasm following the post-translational methylation of arginine residues within proteins and the subsequent proteolysis of these arginine-methylated proteins.
