Prostate cancer support groups, health literacy and consumerism: Are community-based volunteers re-defining older men’s health?

“…Although the finding of unmet need for information evident in this study is consistent with other research using various needs assessment instruments Steginga et al 2001), others have reported different areas of priority Clavarino et al 2002;Lintz et al 2003). 'fears about the cancer spreading' and 'concerns about the worries of those close to you') in the original scale were not included in the short survey even though these items were ranked as moderate to high needs by at least 25% of participants in previous research using this assessment tool Steginga et al 2001;Clavarino et al 2002). Results from this study, however, showed that a number of items related to psychological factors were rated by over 70% of this sample as 'not applicable'.…”

“…In contrast, men with prostate cancer highly rated unmet needs in the sexuality domain, but this is consistent with other studies of this cancer subgroup (Steginga et al 2001;Ream et al 2008). Our findings of needs in the psychological domain are also consistent with previous research (Smith et al 2007) and suggest that health services will need to consider how appropriate supportive care can be offered to men with prostate cancer.…”
