The Simplified Nasal Septal Deviation Evaluation System and Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation Scale Correlation

Abstract: Nasal septal deviation (NSD) is a common condition in otorhinolaryngology practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between localization and severity of NSD, and related complaints as well as to suggest a simplified assessment method for NSD. Seventy-five patients who complaint nasal obstruction were enrolled this study. The affected nasal cavity was divided into 4 separate sections as follows: antero-superior (AS), antero-inferior (AI), postero-superior (PS), and postero-inf… Show more

“…[ 31 ] In contrast, our study comprehensively investigated the ostia in patients with moderate NSD for the following considerations. Severe NSD, defined as a deviated septum touching the lateral nasal wall,[ 12 ] significantly affects the nasal passage, leading to obvious nasal obstruction symptoms. Concurrent septoplasty is necessary to satisfy patient needs and ensure the success of En-DCR.…”

“…Anterior rhinoscopy and 0° rigid nasal endoscopic examination (STORZ, Tuttlingen, Germany) were performed to locate and assess NSD. The Nasal NSD Evaluation System,[ 12 ] which uses a simplified 0–3 scale, was used to determine the severity of NSD. A score of 2, indicative of moderate NSD, was characterized by a septum affecting more than 50% of the nasal passage without contacting the lateral nasal wall [ Fig.…”

“…5,6 To help simplify reporting on the septum from a radiologist perspective, we recommend the The Simplified Nasal Septal Deviation Evaluation System of Sahin et al, which involves division of the septum into 4 quadrants separated in a vertical plane by the head of the inferior turbinate and horizontally by the height of the inferior turbinate. 7 (figure 1). The anterior inferior quadrant is essentially the caudal septum, while the anterior superior quadrant contains the dorsal strut, and the posterior superior quadrant contains the PPE.…”
