Abstract: The first surviving mention, in 1304, of the Mercers' Company of London acting as a body, shows it already fully conscious of its rights and the value of the freedom of the city, and this article discusses how the mistery had arrived at this point. It is suggested that the earliest mistery of mercers received their first regulations as artisans, and that it was the need to protect the privileges of the city's freedom, so important to itinerant mercers, which may have combined the great merchant and the lesser…
