A relação simbiótica entre a figueira, Ficus carica L., e a sua vespa, polinizadora Blastophaga psenes L., é explicitada tendo como objetivos a divulgação científica deste exemplo notável de simbiose e a disponibilização de uma versão atualizada e facilitadora do ensino e aprendizagem de relações interespecíficas, coevolução e mecanismos de controlo pré-zigótico do fluxo génico entre espécies filogeneticamente próximas.A relação interespecífica de mutualismo obrigatório entre figueiras e vespas ocorre há, aproximadamente, 40 milhões de anos 1 , com benefícios para as diversas espécies do género Ficus L., família Moraceae, e para as espécies de vespas da família Agaonidae, ordem Hymenoptera. As figueiras são polinizadas pelas vespas e estas recebem, no interior dos figos, proteção e alimento para a sua descendência. O género Ficus inclui cerca de 850 espécies monoicas de trepadeiras, arbustos e árvores 2 , e cada uma tem uma espécie de vespa que a poliniza. As figueiras produzem síconosinflorescências que, por maturação, se transformam em infrutescências (FIGURA 1).FIGURA 1. Ramo de figueira composto por várias folhas e diversos síconos. Fotografia realizada, em Oeiras, a 17 de maio de 2022.As inflorescências são constituídas por flores masculinas, com perianto de três peças, e por flores femininas, com perianto de cinco peças, que se dispõem na superfície de um recetáculo espesso, invaginado, piriforme e com uma abertura apical denominada ostíolo (FIGURA 2).

Mutualism is ubiquitous in nature and probably all species in the world are involved in some form of such ecological interaction. The evolution of mutualisms is often envisioned in a framework where individual selection leads to reciprocal exploitation that results in net benefits to all the interacting parties, i.e. in a framework in which individual selection intrinsically destabilises the mutualistic association. However, mutualisms are stable, and rarely turn into parasitism. At a macroevolutionary scale, mutualisms have been a source of major evolutionary innovations and have benefited all the species involved. Indeed, complementary traits of the partners enable them to colonise new ecological niches. In this chapter we discuss mutualism as a source of evolutionary innovation, using some insect-plant associations as examples. Firstly, we dedicate a topic to theoretical aspects and hypotheses on evolutionary forces stabilizing mutualisms (and their pitfalls). We present some examples of mutualisms that allowed insects and/or plants to expand their ecological niches. Finally, we focus on fig tree -animal interactions that, putatively, allowed this plant lineage to diversify in subtropical and tropical ecosystems and to form a group of keystone species for the functioning of many forest ecosystems.
