“…This may indicate that despite the lack of inter-chain bonding in PBO [24,25] the HMC fibre has a level of radial crystallite orientation similar to PPTA which has hydrogen bonding between chains [26]. A similar study on Kevlar 49 has reported a significantly lower FWHM value of 568 [27], similar to the value of 558 in this study for PBO AS.…”

“…Compared with PIPD, PBIs, especially poly(p-phenylene benzobisimidazole) (PBI, 5), are difficult to synthesize to high MW polymers, because their low MW oligomers tend to crystallize out of PPA solution before the condensation polymerization greatly advances. This is due to preferential formation of a stable hydrogen bonded network in the presence of the condensation water, and this hydrogen network is more energetically favorable than the fully protonated molecular species dissolved in the solvent (52). Contrarily, PIPD can attain high MW via the formation of the TAP-DHTA (1:1) complex, the TD salt, which affords a fast polymerization cycle and eliminates low MW polymers when amine is polymerized with acid in PPA medium (10,52).…”

“…Chen et al [6] reported a novel PI containing benzimidazole units that showed a good adhesion and a nearly equal CTE value to copper. However, the polymers containing benzimidazole units generally exhibited a high affinity for water, up to 5% water being retained in the polymer even after days of drying in a vacuum oven, [16] which made this PI less attractive in two-layer FCCL applications.…”
