The role of Fusobacteria in oral cancer and immune evasion

Abstract: Purpose of reviewThere is growing evidence that suggests a possible role for bacteria in the progression of cancer. Fusobacteria have been detected in different types of cancers, including colorectal and oral cancers. Fusobacteria are common opportunistic oral bacteria known to cause various infections. In this review, we focus on the association between Fusobacteria and cancer, specifically oral cancer, and provide insight into the role of Fusobacteria in carcinogenesis and immune evasion.Recent findingsRecen… Show more

“…Regarding microbial taxa, we found a lower abundance of Firmicutes and a higher abundance of Fusobacteria and Proteobacteria phyla in SCH‐N, which was inconsistent with previous results investigated in patients with SCH (Shen et al., 2018 ). Fusobacteria contributes to the progression of cancer and has an impact on tumor immune response (Harrandah, 2023 ), and it is also enriched in patients with active major depressive disorder (MDD) (Jiang et al., 2015 ), whereas Proteobacteria contribute to airway inflammation and host metabolism (Cuesta et al., 2022 ; Dicker et al., 2021 ). It indicates that negative symptoms might also be related to inflammation.…”
