This paper analyzes strategic implications of corporate responsibility (CR) and in particular how a firm can differentiate with an environmentally responsible image. A single case study was conducted in the Nordic hospitality industry with semi‐structured interviews as the main data collection method.By adopting an environmentally responsible identity through shared values with the firm's key stakeholders, the firm can reflect an environmentally responsible image. This image can enhance the firm's strategic position through internal and external differentiators from competitors – as the firm becomes a more preferred employer, partner and supplier, it results in enhanced employee motivation, cost savings, better reputation, and greater guest loyalty. The amount of CR depends on the micro/meso/macro/global‐level drivers, and competitive aims of the firm. The emphasis on stakeholder communication becomes greater as the firm increases its CR‐aggressiveness. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and ERP Environment.

Impacts of Common Urban Development Factors on Cultural Conservation in World Heritage Cities: An Indicators-Based Analysis

Within the urban context, heritage conservation has been acknowledged as fundamental for sustainable development. This paper address the need to develop methodologies that enable understanding of the dynamics between these two fields that for long were regarded as opposing practices. The research crosses disciplinary boundaries through a mixed methodology that identifies 27 urban development common indicators as factors that are affecting the conservation of 69 World Heritage Cities (WHC). Indicators, which were selected from global urban monitoring tools, were analyzed within UNESCO State-of-Conservation reporting system. Results reveal key trends on urban factors assessed as a SWOT analysis in relation to the management of WHC. We argue that urban indicators can facilitate the understanding of development impacts in cultural heritage conservation, across the social, economic, and environmental dimensions. This paper contributes to the debate on the ability of indicators to bridge interdisciplinary and methodological issues that were related to common conceptualizations between urban development and heritage conservation and sustainability. The conceptual approach that is presented has proven to offer an empirical basis for a monitoring practice that fosters the sustainable management of urban heritage, which in the light of the New Development Agenda and the gaps in the state-of-the-art, is very much needed.

Cet article traite de l’élaboration d’une grille d’indicateurs de tourisme durable en présentant la stratégie adoptée par les régions de la Gaspésie et des Îles de la Madeleine, au Québec. Une première étape établit une liste d’indicateurs reconnus par les experts et couvrant systématiquement les dimensions du tourisme durable. Une deuxième étape permet de coordonner ces indicateurs à la politique-cadre de tourisme durable de chacune des régions, de façon à les rendre opérationnels sans en réduire la validité. Cette stratégie en deux étapes permet d’identifier une liste d’indicateurs de tourisme durable reconnus, mesurables et cohérents avec la politique touristique de chaque région. Une telle stratégie contribue ainsi à minimiser les risques d’instrumentalisation du concept de tourisme durable et à garantir la validité des démarches d’évaluation et de suivi en la matière
