The Role of Chemical Reactions Placed Between Successive Electron Transfer in the Reduction of 2-Methylthio-4,6-di(alkylamino)-1,3,5-triazines on Mercury Electrodes

Abstract: This paper presents polarographic [direct current and differential pulse (DP)] studies of the electroreduction of the s-triazine derivatives prometryne [2-methylthio-4,6-di(isopropylamino)-1,3,5-triazine], desmetryne [2-methylthio-4-methylamino-6-isopropylamino-1,3,5-triazine], and terbutryne [(2-methylthio-4-ethylamino-6-terbutylamino)-1,3,5-triazine] on mercury electrodes. The studies are performed in the acidity range 2.25 M H2SO4 to pH 6.5. Above this last pH value, no signals were obtained. In DP polaro… Show more

“…Moreover, the differential equations of the Nernst diffusion-layer approximation can be solved by the method of dimensionless variables applied as shown in the literature. [39][40][41][42][43][44] Using this approximation, the following equation can be obtained: [ 7 ] equivalent to: [8] where [AO] is the antioxidant concentration, A is the actual area of the DPV peak and A o the area of this peak in the absence of antioxidant. From Equation 7 it easily follows that when the rate of reaction 3 is very high, reactions 3, 3 and 4 cannot take place, and the minimum value of the peak area of the DPV must be one half of the area in the absence of antioxidant.…”

“…This last value is very low but similar to those found in the reductions of other 1,3,5-triazines. 13,[15][16][17]…”

“…16 In the reduction of the methylthioderivatives the cleavage of the thiomethyl group takes place in more or less extensive manner. 17 As can be seen, the dechlorinated compounds are in most cases intermediates of the four-electron reduction, and in some cases stable enough to yield separate ͑although overlapped͒ reduction waves. It is interesting to elucidate the reduction mechanism of such intermediates to contribute to the knowledge of the overall reaction pathways of the herbicides.…”
