This study was carried out during three successive seasons 2011, 2012 and 2013 at a private orchard located in Al-Hello in Ajman Emirate (UAE). The experiment was designed to study the effect of organic manure and NPKS as soil application on yield, fruit quality, and fruit mineral nutrient content of Khenazi date palm cultivar grown in sandy soil. Fertilization treatments consisted of N1, 600g or N2, 1000g (urea 46%N), P 800g (triple superphosphate, 48% P2O5), K 1200g (potassium sulphate, 50% K2SO4) and S 700g sulphur (90% granular S), in addition to organic manure. Al experimental trees received 100g mixture of micronutrients, with the exception of the control. The results showed that combination treatments and organic manure significantly affected fruit weight, flesh weight, fruit volume, moisture content and fruit TSS. Application of different fertilization treatments significantly affected yield components of fruit, number of fruits/strand, fruit number/bunch, fruit set percent and total fruit yield / palm. The study revealed that combination of fertilizers improved fruit nutrient content of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu. Moisture and TSS% content, number of fruits/strand, number of fruits/bunch, fruit nutrients content of Fe, Mn and Zn were significantly different due to the application of N1+K+S.

For sandy-textured soils where most of the MENA's date palms grow (Kassem, 2012), soils with an OM content of 4% to 5% can hold 10 times or more water and nutrients than sand soils with less OM according to the information provided by Davis and Wilson (2000). This in turn would contribute significantly to water saving efforts in the region and enable more efficiently water usage.…”

Countries in the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) region are among the most water-scarce regions in the world, and their dryland soils are usually poor in organic carbon content (<0.5%). In this study, we summarize examples of how people in the few oases of the MENA region overcome environmental challenges by sustainably managing economically important date production. On the basis of the limited studies found in the existing literature, this mini-review focuses on the role of traditional soil organic matter amendments beneath the soil surface as a key tool in land restoration. We conclude that soil organic matter amendments can be very successful in restoring soil water and preventing the soil from salinization.

This study was carried out during three successive seasons of 2015, 2016 and 2017 to evaluate yield and fruit quality of Sewy date palm cultivar grown under Aswan, El-Kharga, Assiut and Al-Dakhla climatic conditions. The data revealed that, Sewy cultivar grown in El-Kharga and Al-Dakhla which had higher temperature and lower relative humidity (R.H.) gave the higher bunch weight and total yield compared with those grown in Assiut which had lower temperature and higher R.H.High temperature and low R.H. from March to October caused earlier fruit maturity in Aswan and El-Kharga with about three to four weeks than in Assiut, whereas the earlier harvest date under Al-Dakhla about two weeks than in Assiut.Fruit dimensions, weight and flesh percentage recorded the greatest values in Assiut and Al-Dakhla as compared with other studied locations. At high temperature and low R.H. under Aswan and El-Kharga conditions, the pulp of Sewy dates had higher TSS and total sugar content whereas it had less moisture content than pulp of those produced in the other localities.No significant differences were observed in chemical fruits quality that produced under El-Kharga and Al-Dakhla locations. It is evident from the foregoing results that the climatic conditions of Al-Dakhla and El-Kharga are ideal climatic conditions for the cultivation and production of Sewy date palm.
