Significance of Empty Sella in Cerebrospinal Fluid Leaks

“…Clinically, 81% of our spontaneous leak patients were obese, middle-aged women, and many of them presented with symptoms of pressure-type headaches, pulsatile tinnitus, balance disorders, and visual complaints, in addition to their CSF rhinorrhea. These demographics and clinical presentations are essentially identical to that seen in the typical BIH population 2 . Spontaneous CSF leak patients that do not exhibit florid symptoms of BIH may have their own internal CSF diversion because they are actively leaking CSF before surgical repair.…”

Even though steroid treatment is suggested in several studies in literature, it is reported that the treatment should be avoided due to its side effects and that it may cause PS as rebound after the discontinuation of steroid usage 22 . In our study, 16 patients (59.3%) were administered only acetazolamide with a maximum dose of 1500 milligram/day.…”
