The Quality of Qualitative Research

Abstract: In general, an appreciation of the standards of qualitative research and the types of qualitative data analyses available to researchers have not kept pace with the growing presence of qualitative studies in medical science. They also provide 3 major theoretical frameworks for data collection and analysis that investigators may consider adopting. These 3 approaches are ethnography, exis… Show more

“…Transcripts were read several times and coded according to the grounded theory process; this required the extraction of categories from participants ' discourse, avoiding the application of predetermined ones. The researcher gains an understanding of this phenomena from the participant's perspective (Collingridge & Gantt, 2008;Delaney, 2003), hence they are only interested in the experience and meaning held by the participants and how these meanings vary in order to challenge existing structural or normative assumptions (Lester, 1999).…”

“…The approach requires researchers to select interviewees with a particular rationale and a specific purpose related to the research question in mind (Collingridge and Gantt 2008). With respect to the German Food Bank this approach was chosen, because demographic profiles of volunteers and other food bank actors that would allow representative sampling are not available.…”
