“…Trehalose is known to be the main sugar in insects’ haemolymph, where it is the key energy storage molecule (Florkin & Jeuniaux 1964; Chapman 1998). The trehalose concentration we obtained (10·6 µg µl −1 ) is also very consistent with that obtained in other Hymenoptera and in Coleoptera ( Apis mellifera 10·4 µg µl −1 , Tenebrio molitor 15·5 µg µl −1 , Periplaneta americana 15·3 µg µl −1 , Heliothis zea 10·4 µg µl −1 ; see Fell 1990 and Leta, Gilbert & Morse 1996). The presence of sucrose seems less common but has also been reported in butterfly larvae (Bounias 1983).…”
