The present study evaluates anti-hyperlipidaemic and anti-atherogenic activities in Triton WR-1339 and high cholesterol diet induced hyperlipidemia in rat models. Chloroform, ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts of whole plant of Blepharis maderaspatensis were evaluated for their anti-hyperlipidaemic and anti-atherogenic activities using Triton WR-1339 induced hyperlipidaemic rats (acute study) and high cholesterol diet induced (chronic study) experimental models. Hyperlipideamia was developed by intraperitonial injection of Triton WR-1339 (200 mg/kg body weight) in acute study and feeding with cholesterol rich diet in chronic study. The animals were divided into various groups and intragastric administration of various extracts of B. maderaspatensis (100 mg/kg) body weight was given in both models. After the completion of the treatment, they were evaluated for serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), atherogenic index (AI), coronary risk index (CRI) and were compared with the rats treated with simvastatin (20 mg/kg) of the body weight. Pre-treatment of ethanol extracts of B. maderaspatensis significantly reduced the serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, VLDL, AI and CRI as comparable with simvastatin.

Abstract. In the present study, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of Kangen-karyu (KGK) in a repeated cerebral ischemia model (2 × 10 min, 1-h interval). A 21-day pre-and postischemic treatment with KGK (10 -300 mg/kg) and aspirin (5 mg/ kg) improved the spatial memory impairment and neuronal death in the hippocampal CA1 region induced by repeated cerebral ischemia. However, a 7-day post-ischemic treatment with KGK did not attenuate the spatial memory impairment and neuronal death in this model. To determine the mechanism of action of KGK, we investigated the effects of a 14-day pre-ischemic treatment with KGK on cerebral blood flow in the hippocampal area of the repeated cerebral ischemia model using laser Doppler flowmetry. The 14-day pre-ischemic treatment with KGK increased the cerebral blood flow during reperfusion. These results suggest that a 21-day pre-and post-ischemic treatment with KGK can protect against brain damage caused by cerebral ischemia by increasing the cerebral blood flow in the hippocampal area.

Background: Vernonia amygdalina, commonly called bitter-leaf, is widely consumed in many parts of Africa, and Nigeria, in particular. The leaf extract has been reported to have antimicrobial, anti-plasmodial, anti-helminthic, as well as prebiotic properties, but its immuno-modulatory effects have not been well-studied, neither have the prebiotics been identified. This study evaluated the immuno-modulatory properties of the aqueous leaf extract and identified the prebiotic components. Methods: The immuno-modulatory potential was evaluated by monitoring the effects of oral administration of the extract on immunological, haematological and lipid profiles of Rattus norvegicus, while the prebiotic components were identified by thin layer chromatography (TLC), following liquid-liquid fractionation of the extract. Results: Consumption of the extract caused significant increases in CD4 + -, white blood cell-, total lymphocyte-and high density lipid (HDL) counts; decreases in low density lipid (LDL) and triglycerides and no significant effect on haemoglobin (Hb) and packed cell volume (PCV) in the blood of test animals. The water-soluble fraction of the extract contained most of the phytoconstituents of the extract and Thin Layer Chromatographic analysis of the fraction revealed the presence of fructo-oligosaccharide and galacto-oligosaccharide prebiotics. Conclusion:The results from this study have shown that the aqueous leaf extract of V. amygdalina has positive immune-modulatory and haematologic effects and contains some important prebiotic compounds.
