How Can We Improve the Consumption of a Nutritionally Balanced Maternal Diet in Rural Bangladesh? The Key Elements of the “Balanced Plate” Intervention

Social Dynamics in Rural Sri Lankan Hospitals

“…To our knowledge no researchers have previously studied Sri Lankan peripheral hospital teamwork. However, Nichter (1986) did report issues relating to status and teamwork when peripheral hospital staff worked with outside people, such as community health care workers who did not belong to a hospital team. Findings from our study demonstrate that political influence and social class or caste determined the level of interaction between field health workers and hospital staff, in addition to the hierarchy within the hospital categories.…”

“…Although peripheral hospitals have been generally recognized as disadvantaged health settings with limited resources (Nichter, 1986; Sachs, 1989; Senarathna et al, 2008), there were staff members who had a positive perception of working in these places. Some doctors said that such hospitals provided them with more decision-making power and gave them the freedom to practice leadership skills.…”
