The primary growth of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma cells in vitro is effectively supported by paired cancer-associated fibroblasts alone

Abstract: Most primarily cultured laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma cells are difficult to propagate in vitro and have a low survival rate. However, in our previous work to establish a laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma cell line, we found that laryngeal cancer-associated fibroblasts appeared to strongly inhibit the apoptosis of primarily cultured laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma cells in vitro. In this study, we investigated whether paired laryngeal cancer-associated fibroblasts alone can effectively support the growth… Show more

“…Notably, a phase II study on the TGF-β pathway was launched in HCC patients ( Herbertz et al, 2015 ). In a co-culture system of CAFs and laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, CCL7 protein levels were elevated, accompanied by rapid tumor cell proliferation, but the influence of CCL7 was negligible compared with that of CXCL12 in this study ( Wang et al, 2017 ).…”

“…These observations have changed our understanding of cancer progression and behavior. Once thought to be an isolated group of diseased cells, many malignant tumors, including Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinomas (HNSCC), are now regarded as a sophisticated and dynamic tissue consisting of multiple cell types (7)(8)(9)(10)(11). Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are among the most abundant cells within this tissue.…”
