The Prevalence of Hepatitis C Virus Infection in Oral Lichen Planus in an Ethnic Chinese Cohort of 232 Patients

Abstract: Aim Oral lichen planush (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease, and has been reported to have a correlation with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in some regional investigations. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of HCV in patients with oral lichen planus in an ethnic Chinese cohort. Methodology The antibody of HCV infection was detectedby using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Moreover, the clinical characteristics of whole the cohort have also been studied, such as the gender, age, clinical t… Show more

“…12,13 Various medicines and chemicals may cause OLP or OLP-like reactions 11 Virusesthat play a role in the etiology of OLP include the herpes viruses, especially the Epstein–Barr Virus, 14 human papillomavirus, 15 and hepatitis C virus (HCV). 16,17 Although it has been determined that OLP and viruses are related, the roles of bacteria in the etiology of OLP have not yet been determined. However, it is known that OLP is related to periodontal diseases.…”

“…There are six variants of OLP which include papular, reticular, plaque-like, atrophic, erosive, and bullous disease. Erosive mucosal disease is most problematic given the pain associated with the disease and can lead to oral candidiasis as well as carry premalignant risk [51,52]. Occasionally, the only identifying clue in OLP can be the sole presence of Wickham's striae.…”

“…Important previously published meta-analyses were also included, such as those by Lodi et al (2004), Shengyuan et al (2009), Lodi, Pellicano andCarrozzo (2010), among others (Birkenfeld et al, 2011;Lin, Lu, & Lu, 2010;Halawani, Balbisi, Alotaibi, Alsaif, & Bakir, 2010;Zhou, Jiang, Liu, Zeng, & Chen, 2010;Rübsam et al, 2011). Analysis of 64 articles detected that patients with OLP had 5.58 times more chances of having a concomitant infection by HCV when compared to control population (Gorouhi et al, 2014).…”
