“…In a recent survey ALLAN (1977) concluded that 5096 of all amalgam restorations had to be replaced within 8 years of function. This high turnover of amalgam restorations corroborates the results from investigations by MOORE & STEWART (1967), RICHARDSON &;BOYD (1973), ELDERTON (1976) and LAVELLE (1976).…”

“…Secondary caries has been frequently quoted as the main reason (Dunston et al ., 1978; Qvist et al ., 1986; Mjor, 1989). As it has been suggested that oral environment and stresses of clinical service are themselves factors in the degradation of restorations (Elderton, 1976), the high proportion of bulk amalgam fracture may be explained by the stresses generated from vigorous mastication of the fibrous component of the diet. The staple food items in Nigeria (especially in the rural/semi‐urban community) comprise mostly of maize (roasted or boiled, corn flour), cassava (boiled, cassava flour, gari) and yam (roasted or boiled, yam flour, elubo, pounded yam).…”

“…The most frequently recorded reason for replacements of failed restorations was secondary caries (Friedl et al ., 1994), accounting for 59·0% of all failed restorations in the study of Mjor and Toffeneti (1992). Result of other studies revealed a third of all restorations to be defective (Abramowitz, 1966; Elderton, 1976). Other causes of failure include tooth fracture, amalgam fracture, marginal degradation, pulpal pathology, the presence of amalgam overhangs, very worn down restoration and lack of contact point (Cunningham et al ., 1990; Akerboom et al ., 1993).…”

“…In the 1970s, there was a realization that lifetime restorations were unattainable and this became an important stimulus for the need to conserve tooth tissue when preparing teeth. 1 By the 1980's Elderton questioned the traditional cavity design for intra-coronal amalgam restorations. 2 Later, following the development of composites, cavity design changed again.…”
