“…Total response rates for each of the three sample groups were as follows: Division 29, N = 155 (38.8%); Division 32, N = 173 (38.4%); AABT, N = 134 (39.4%). The return rate for each of the three associations was approximately 40%, a rate consistent with previous national surveys of psychotherapists (e.g., Goldman & Mendelsohn, 1969;) and clinical psychologists (e.g., Goldschmid etal, 1969;Kelly, 1961;Norcross & Prochaska, 1982;Tuma & Pratt, 1982;Wildman & Wildman, 1967). This investigation was more stringent, however, in using only those completed questionnaires of practicing psychotherapists working with adults.…”

“…There have been negative results using judges' decisions (Rubin, Ragins, Schachter, & Wimberly, 1979;Wanderer, 1969;Wildman & Wildman, 1967), but Downloaded by [University of Otago] at 03:38 07 July 2015 these do not suggest that figure drawings are invalid assessment instruments. Rather, they suggest that reading the drawings is a skill that is not well developed in some individuals.…”

“…As Glover (1955) found, therapists professing adherence to the same school betray a startling diversity of belief and conduct when closely studied. This problem is compounded by the fact that "eclecticism," a label which disavows adherence to a particular orientation, is popularly cited by research respondents as a professed school (Wildman & Wildman, 1967;Goldshmid et a]., 1969;Garfield & Kurtz, 1974). Despite these limitations, it was reasoned that an inquiry into professed orientations could elicit citations of influential thinkers or theories that are particular to one or the other discipline and thus reveal diacritic trends or affiliations that might otherwise be overlooked.…”
