The persistence of a broad range of antibiotics during calve, pig and broiler manure storage

Abstract: After administration to livestock, a large fraction of antibiotics are excreted unchanged via excreta and can be transferred to agricultural land. For effective risk assessment a critical factor is to determine which antibiotics can be expected in the different environmental compartments. After excretion, the first relevant compartment is manure storage. In the current study, the fate of a broad scope of antibiotics (n = 46) during manure storage of different livestock animals (calves, pigs, broilers) was inve… Show more

“…At present, the abuse of antibiotics has caused it to enter our soil and water in various ways, such as the medical industry wastewater, animal feces, and so on. Antibiotics have had a serious impact on the environmental problems of our country [5][6][7]. When the antibiotic wastewater enters the water body, as an external factor, it will break the original biological chain, damage the environment, and endanger people's health [8,9].…”

“…Lahr et al (2018) veronderstellen dat het diepere gedeelte van de mestkelder anaeroob is en dat daardoor diergeneesmiddelen mogelijk langzamer afbreken. Berendsen et al (Berendsen et al, 2018) concluderen dat ook mest type een rol speelt bij het afbraakproces. Daarbij is het type geneesmiddel ook belangrijk.…”

“…It is believed that continuous, improper and high usage of antibiotics have contributed to the evolution and development of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in various receiving environments (Brown et al 2006, Laxminarayan et al 2013. Antibiotics, different from other classes of drugs, are poorly absorbed by animals, with around 30%-90% of doses excreted to the environment through manure in the form of the original antibiotics (Thames et al 2012, Zhou et al 2013, Zhan and Xiao 2017, Berendsen et al 2018. The long-term selection pressure imposed by antibiotics can contribute to the enrichment and dispersal of ARGs in the environment (Hu et al 2016).…”
