Abstract

“…We worked particularly on the diffusion of carbon dioxide, which we expected, and which turned out to be, the most diffusible of the three main respiratory gases O 2 , N 2 and CO 2 . A short note giving the results of most of the experiments described in this paper has already been published (Denton, Liddicoat & Taylor, 1970) and similar results have been given for Anguilla anguilla by Kutchai & Steen (1971), who found that the average permeability of the swimbladder walls was about one-tenth that of connective tissue and who also attributed this impermeability to the guanine crystals which the swimbladder wall contains.…”

“…These are about 10 times more abundant in the deep-sea eel-like fishes Synaphobranchus and Halosaurus than in the shallow living conger eel. Similar investigations of swimbladder permeability have been carried out on European eels (Kutchai & Steen, 1971), on a lantern fish (Ross, 1976), and on several shallow-living marine fishes (Lapennas & Schmidt-Nielsen, 1977). Brown & Copeland (1977, 1978 describe overlapping, nucleated, circular platelets in the submucosal connective tissue of the swimbladders of several fishes.…”

“…The swim bladder is an internal organ in fish that controls buoyancy. 36 It is covered by a silvery layer of guanine crystals that serves as a diffusion barrier to gases. 37 , 38 The (100) plate face of the polygons varies between 2 and 50 μm in width.…”

“…A mixture of irregular polygonal plates and elongated hexagons (like those from fish skin) were extracted from the swim bladder of the sardine,Sardina pilchardus (swim bladder) (Figure f and Figure S2). The swim bladder is an internal organ in fish that controls buoyancy . It is covered by a silvery layer of guanine crystals that serves as a diffusion barrier to gases. , The (100) plate face of the polygons varies between 2 and 50 μm in width.…”
