The Performance of Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP) Water-Retaining Asphalt Mixture

Abstract: Lowering the temperature of the road surface is one efficient way to alleviate the urban heat island effect. Therefore water-retaining asphalt mixture was produced by adding super absorbent polymer (SAP) containing cement mortar to the porous asphalt mixture. In this study, the water absorption capacity, mechanical strength and fluidity of the cured water-retaining mortar were investigated to determine the optimum SAP dosage in water-retaining mortar. Furthermore, the microstructure of the hardened water-retai… Show more

“…The heat absorption rate of asphalt pavements is so high that their daytime temperature exceeds 60 • C and, thus, the ambient temperature of the road is also significant [7]; the heat stored in the pavement is released at night, contributing to increasing the ambient temperature. In turn, the high temperature of the road surface is the main cause of rutting deformation [8]. Therefore, reducing the heat absorption of asphalt pavements has become crucial for preventing the urban heat island effect and reducing the rutting deformation of roads [9].…”

“…The permeable asphalt pavement has been widely used because it has multiple functions, such as noise mitigation [106] and safety enhancement in the rain [107]. It doesn't need any adjustment to the structure and materials of permeable pavement for evaporative cooling in practice, which will not damage the original pavement performance.…”

“…It doesn't need any adjustment to the structure and materials of permeable pavement for evaporative cooling in practice, which will not damage the original pavement performance. For water retaining asphalt pavements, researchers mainly focused on the water-retaining materials and pavement performance [107]. Jiang et al (2016) [90] obtained a water retaining asphalt pavement through grouting a water-retaining slurry, prepared using fly ash and calcium hydroxide, into porous asphalt pavement.…”

“…It is soluble in neither inorganic nor organic solvents and has a speci c crosslinking degree (CD) and network structure [2]. SARs have a good adsorption performance, water retention capacity, pressure resistance, and heat resistance and have been used widely used in agriculture, forestry, and horticulture [3,4], industry [5][6][7], health supplies [8], and other elds [9][10][11][12][13][14].…”
