“…The WHO study, however, included a much wider age range of participants. Our current findings from an elderly Yoruba population are similar to those found by Uwakwe (2000) -who reported a prevalence of depression of 19% -and somewhat higher than the rate reported by Sokoya and Baiyewu (2003) of 7.4%. It is consistent with the opinion of (Tomlinson et al, 2006) that depressive symptoms are common in sub-Saharan Africa.…”

It was commoner in females, and in those above the age of 65 years as it was found by Desalu et al, [ 2 ] six years before this study, in the same geographical area.…”

“…Ogun et al, [ 6 ] in another southwestern tertiary institution in Nigeria, found a similar female preponderance. The reason for the slight female preponderance in this study, as opposed to other studies, [ 2 , 3 ] is the longer female life span to the age that stroke is most prevalent. Seizure disorders were recorded as the second most prevalent disease in this study similar to findings in some other countries where it is predominant in the young age group, and commoner in males as reported in most African countries.…”

“…There were other studies that found even higher prevalence of impaired cognitive function than what was reported in this study, Yarube et al [64] conducted a similar study in northern Nigeria [64] and reported a prevalence of 64.0% among nondiabetic participants and Artero et al [65] reported 42.0% in France [65]. While unlike this study, some works like Uwakwe et al [66] and Guerchet et al [67] study in the rural areas of Nigeria and Benin reported 10.4% and 11.8%, respectively [66][67]. Different sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics in the different study settings could explain the disparities in the results.…”
