“…In RPON the pain has been attributed to the inflammatory nature of cranial neuropathies (somehow triggering trigeminal sensory neurons, releasing mediators such as calcitonin gene-related peptide), but hemifacial spasm caused by a NVC for instance does not usually cause headache. In optic neuritis (ON), the inflamed optic nerve sheath is the plausible cause of the pain, 14 and the more severe the inflammation is, the higher the possibility that the patient will suffer from headache. 15 Pain in ON usually subsides in about a week, and the visual acuity improves slowly over a few weeks.…”
