The Observer Memory Questionnaire—Parent Form: Introducing a new measure of everyday memory for children

Abstract: Relatively little research has focused on everyday memory function in childhood, possibly reflecting the limited number of measures available. This study introduces the Observer Memory Questionnaire-Parent Form (OMQ-PF), which assesses parental beliefs about their child's everyday memory. The OMQ-PF and a selection of neuropsychological measures were administered to a cohort of healthy children in Study 1 (n 5 376; 5-16 years old) and a temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) group in Study 2 (n 5 44; 6-16 years old). “…These difficulties, evident on standardized memory tests or laboratory tasks, have also been documented as affecting the way that children use memory to navigate everyday activities [31,32]. Furthermore, it has been established that, in comparison with controls, children with TLE have poorer autobiographical memories.…”

“…An 'Attention and memory deficit' was assessed as follows: at least one score of 1.5 SD below the mean on Stories (verbal memory) or Family Pictures (visual memory) of the Children's Memory Scale (CMS [54]) and/or Sky Search (selective attention) or Score Dual Task (Score DT: sustained attention) of the Test of Everyday Attention for Children (TEA-Ch [18]) and/or a score of at least 1 SD below the mean on the Behavioral Assessment System for Children-2 Composite (BASC-2 (adaptability/behaviour) [60]) and/or a score594 on the Observer Memory Questionnaire-Parent Form (OMQ-PF (functional memory) [55]). A summary of measures and timeline of administration is presented in Table II [51].…”

“…In addition, this methodology shares a common ground with that applied in the case of children and their parents. In order to verify memory skills (or to detect possible neurological deficiencies) parents are asked to fill in questionnaires about their children's memories (Drysdale et al 2004;Gonzalez et al 2008).…”
