ABSTRACT:The chemical grouting is one type of ground-improvement methods. It injects liquid consolidation material into the gaps of a soft sandy ground. It is mainly used for improving a stable ground, such as by preventing liquefaction and increasing the strength of the ground. Chemical grouting has been successfully applied at many construction sites; however, the behavior of the chemical solution being injected into the ground is unclear. Furthermore, because the ground involves uncertainty, it is difficult to determine the penetration range of the chemicals (grouting materials). In this study, the authors carry out a seepage flow analysis of a chemical solution for a ground requiring improvement due to uncertainty. They then compare the difference in the behavior of the chemical solution between the case in which the ground is assumed to be heterogeneous and that in which it is assumed to be homogeneous.

The Komesu underground dam is the first fullscale underground dam constructed to prevent saltwater intrusion in Japan. Although the cutoff wall of the dam effectively reduces the movement of saltwater into the reservoir area, saltwater masses remained behind the dam at the time of its completion, and saltwater can intrude beneath and diffuse through the wall, particularly when the reservoir level is below the sea level because of high pumping levels during the drought years. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate in advance whether the saltwater concentration in the pumped water is likely to exceed or not the permissible salinity level because of an increase in the residual saltwater mass as a result of saltwater intrusion and to take necessary measures to suitably manage the saltwater level behind the dam. To analyze saltwater intrusion, we first selected the optimal program suitable for the analysis of saltwater intrusion. Second, we examined the longitudinal dispersivity and the effect of the cone of depression around the pumping wells. Then we analyzed saltwater intrusion into the reservoir area in detail by using a two-dimensional convective-dispersive analysis. The results of the analysis make it possible to improve management of saltwater in the reservoir area behind the underground dam.

An evaluation method that can express the local leakage of leachate from joint sections in steel pipe sheet pile (SPSP) cutoff walls is discussed in this study. In particular, the evaluation of environmental feasibility (containment of leachates containing toxic substances) considering a three-dimensional arrangement and hydraulic conductivity distribution of the joint sections in the SPSP cutoff wall is compared with an evaluation that uses the equivalent hydraulic conductivity. This equivalent hydraulic conductivity assumes that the joint section and the steel pipe are integrated; therefore, the hydraulic conductivity is substituted with a uniform permeable layer. However, in an evaluation that employs the equivalent hydraulic conductivity, it is diffi cult to consider the local leakage of leachate containing toxic substances from the joint sections in the SPSP cutoff wall. It was established that evaluations of the environmental feasibility of SPSP cutoff walls with joint sections must take into account the local leakage of leachates containing toxic substances from the joint sections. Also, it was clarifi ed that technologies that lower the hydraulic conductivities of joint sections in SPSP cutoff walls and also facilitate the use of sparser joint arrangements contribute signifi cantly to increasing the environmental feasibility of SPSP cutoff walls at landfi ll sites.Key words Coastal landfi ll site · Environmental feasibility · Local leakage of leachate · Steel pipe sheet pile · Vertical cutoff barrier J Mater Cycles Waste Manag (2009) 11:55-64
