Akdeniz’in merkezindeki stratejik konumu nedeniyle tarihi olayların bir kavşağı olan Sicilya Adası, bu süreçlere bağlı olarak gelişen çeviri faaliyetleri ile Yunanca ve Arapça edebî ve bilimsel eserlerin Latinceye çevrildiği bir merkez olmuştur. Böylelikle bu kültürlerin birikiminin Avrupa’ya aktarılmasında önemli rol oynamış ve az sayıda ama çok önemli eserlerin çevirileri ile Endülüs’ten sonra ikinci sırayı almıştır. Bu bağlamda bu çalışmanın amacı Sicilya Adası’nda ortaya konmuş olan çeviri faaliyetlerine ve çevirmenlerine ışık tutmaktır. Bu hedef doğrultusunda yapılan araştırma sonucunda çeviri etkinliklerinin adanın tarihsel süreçlerine bağlı olarak zirve yaptığı bulunmuştur. Çeviri etkinliklerinin arttığı bu süreçler; Hauteville Hanedanlığı (I. William Dönemi), Hohenstaufen Hanedanlığı (II. Frederik ve oğlu Manfred Dönemi) ve Fransa Krallığı (Charles d'Anjou Dönemi) dönemleri olmak üzere üç gruba ayrılmıştır. Bu kapsamda bu çalışmanın odak noktasını ilk dönem çeviri faaliyetleri ve çevirmenleri oluşturmaktadır. Bu çevirmenlere Vatikan Kütüphanesinde (Vat. Lat. 2056) bulunan bir el yazmasının (yaklaşık olarak 1160 yılında Yunanca orijinalinden çevrilmiş Batlamyus’un en önemli eseri olan Almagest’in en eski Latince versiyonunun) önsözünde dikkat çekilmiştir. Bu önsözde bir bölüm (24-38. satırlar), el yazmasının geliş koşullarını ve Latinceye çevriliş süreçlerini aktarmış ve bu dönemin önde gelen aktörleri olarak Amiral Eugenius, Henry Aristippus ve Salerno’lu Tıp Öğrencisine doğrudan bir bağlantı sağlamıştır. Bu bağlamda bu çalışmada elde edilen veriler nitel araştırma yöntemleri kullanılarak toplanmış ve betimsel analiz yöntemi ile analiz edilmiştir. Ulaşılan bulgular Sicilya Adası tarihi süreçleri ve Hauteville Hanedanlığı (I. William Dönemi) çeviri faaliyetleri ve çevirmenleri olmak üzere iki bölümde ele alınmıştır. Tartışma bölümünde bu dönem ile ilgili yapılmış araştırmalar değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırma, Sicilya Adasındaki ilk dönem çeviri faaliyetlerine yönelik olarak sunulan öneriler ile tamamlanmıştır.
