The most successful and widespread nonindigenous invasive fish species occurring in the Central European bioregion are heterogeneous with respect to their origins, taxonomy, mode of arrival, vectors and pathways of dispersal. We surveyed whether these non-native species have common lifehistory that might facilitate their invasion and differentiate them from native species. Ten life-history traits of 59 freshwater fish species were examined: maximum body length, longevity, age and length at maturation, maximum absolute fecundity, egg size, larval size at hatching, spawning duration and type, parental investment. Principal Component Analysis revealed that the traits that accounted for the first two principle components (86.4 % of total variation) were maximum body length, age and size at maturation, longevity, fecundity, egg size and larval length at hatching. Five groups of species were distinguished by cluster analysis, those comprising native fish species being characterized by medium-to-large size, elevated longevity, late maturation, high fecundity, and no parental care. In contrast, groups of non-native invasive fish species were characterized by small-tomedium body length, short longevity, early maturation, relatively low fecundity, relatively large eggs, multiple spawning, extended reproductive seasons and some form of parental care. These life-history traits, along with broad diet breath and environmental tolerance, appear to facilitate the invasion of freshwater fish in the Central European bioregion.

The crucian carp Carassius carassius (Linnaeus, 1758) is a species with restricted and decreasing distribution in Europe. Six males and six females of the species from the Baltic Sea basin in Poland were examined to show sequentially CMA3/AgNO3 staining pattern, DAPI staining, and, for the first time in literature, molecular cytogenetic analysis using double-colour fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) with 28S and 5S rDNA probes. The karyotype consisted of 20 m, 36 sm and 44 sta chromosomes, NF=156. The AgNO3 stained NORs were most frequently located terminally in the short arms of two sm and two sta elements, and CMA3-positive sites were also observed suggesting abundant GC-rich repetitive DNA in the regions. Other CMA3-positive sites in the short arms of six to ten sm and sta chromosomes were detected. The results based on 28S rDNA FISH confirmed the location of rDNA sites. DAPI-negative staining of NORs suggested the scarcity of AT-rich DNA in the regions. FISH with 5S rDNA probe revealed 8–14 loci (ten and 12 in respectively 49 and 29% of metaphases). They were located in two sm and eight to ten sta chromosomes and six of them were larger than others. Simultaneously, mapping of the two rDNA families on the chromosomes of C. carassius revealed that both 28S and 5S rDNA probes were located in different chromosomes. Molecular cytogenetic data of C. carassius presented here for the first time give an important insight into the structure of chromosomes of this polyploid and declining species and may be useful in its systematics.

The Prussian carp may occur as diploid (2n=100) and/or triploid (3n=150) individuals, co-existing in many natural populations. The simultaneous occurrence of individuals with different ploidy makes the taxonomy of this species unclear. Additionally, the taxonomic status of C. gibelio has become even more enigmatic due to its hybridizing with other nonindigenous cyprinids. Since the variation within 5S rDNA can serve as a suitable marker for molecular identification of the fish ploidy, the main aim of present study was to compare this rDNA sequence between Prussian carp individuals with different ploidy levels: diploids (2n =100) and triploids (3n=150-160). PCR amplification of 5S rDNA generated two bands of approximately 340 and 470 bp in length (in both diploids and triploids) and band 200 bp visible in some individuals. These results indicate the presence of at least two different classes of 5S rRNA gene. Analysis of their nucleotide composition revealed no differences within the class of 340 bp and several nucleotide differences within the class of 470 bp between diploid and triploid individuals. The 5S rDNA variability detected in this study indicates the potential usefulness of this sequence for the identification of diploid and triploid individuals of the Prussian carp.
