The newcastle connection or UNIXes of the world unite!

Abstract: In this paper we describe a software subsystem that can be added to each of a set of physically interconnected UNIX or UNIX look‐alike systems, so as to construct a distributed system which is functionally indistinguishable at both the user and the program level from a conventional single‐processor UNIX system. The techniques used are applicable to a variety and multiplicity of both local and wide area networks, and enable all issues of inter‐processor communication, network protocols, etc., to be hidden. “…We could possibly use the path expression syntax to navigate among databases contained in each other the way directories are, or among databases merely situated in different parts of a directory hierarchy. Taking this further, we could even bridge different hosts by path expressions navigating such a hierarchy [35]. Following the hypertext transfer protocol, HTTP, we devised a protocol to connect various Aldat databases, prefixing the path expressions with its name, aldatp.…”

“…This traditional model of file system semantics is easy for clients to understand, but an efficient distributed implementation is quite complex. The simplest implementations, such as tlhe Newcastle Connection [5], provide direct access to the blocks of files from a named collection of file system instances. Performance is improved in the Apollo Domain file system [11] and Sun Microsystems' NFS [221 by adding local caching of file blocks.…”
