Climatologically, an abrupt enhancement of convection occurs in mid-July over the western North Pacific (WNP) around 20°N, 150°E known as a convection jump (CJ), which is associated with a rapid diminishment of the Baiu rainband over central Japan through excitation of stationary Rossby wave. In view of the subtropical-origin teleconnection, we examined a projected future delay of the Baiu withdrawal under global warming conditions with relevance to future changes in seasonal evolution over the WNP. Based on reproducibility evaluation of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 3 (CMIP3) multi-model outputs with respect to seasonal evolution of summertime precipitation over central Japan, we computed weighted multi-model ensembles, which are used for diagnosis of the projected future CJ changes. The result shows that CJ under global warming will occur more southeastward. In the future projection, increases in sea surface temperature (SST) over the equatorial Pacific and subtropical North Pacific are larger than those in the adjacent regions. Sensitivity experiments with a general circulation model (MJ98 AGCM) utilizing these salient warm SST anomalies also show the southeastward shift of CJ in comparison with a control simulation. These results indicate that the change in the location of subtropical convections associated with the spatial distribution of warm SST anomalies could be an important factor for the late termination of the Baiu season over central Japan under global warming conditions.

[1] Using both a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model (GCM) and an atmospheric GCM, we investigate the effects of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) on the onset of the South Asian summer monsoon by conducting simulations with and without the TP. In the coupled GCM, the presence of the TP causes the monsoon onset to occur approximately 15 days later in the Arabian Sea (AS) and India (ID) and approximately 10 days earlier in the Bay of Bengal (BB). These changes are attributed to different atmospheric circulation patterns and different conditions within the adjacent oceans, such as the AS and the BB. When the TP is included, lower sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the AS contribute to a stable lower atmosphere, which suppresses convection over the AS and ID in May. In contrast, low pressure over South Asia, caused by the TP, induces a southwesterly toward the BB that transports a substantial amount of water vapor to the BB. This flow results in an earlier monsoon in the BB. Without the TP, higher SSTs that are formed in the AS in May destabilize the lower atmosphere and create a depression, resulting in an earlier onset of the monsoon over the AS and ID. Consequently, the cyclonic circulation spreads abruptly to the BB, and precipitation begins to increase over the BB. Therefore, the air-sea interaction in the adjacent ocean under the influence of the TP strongly modulates the onset of the South Asian summer monsoon. Abstract. The mid-Pliocene (3.3 to 3.0 million yr ago), a globally warm period before the Quaternary, is recently attracting attention as a new target for paleoclimate modelling and data-model synthesis. This paper reports setups and results of experiments proposed in Pliocene Model Intercomparison Project (PlioMIP) using a global climate model, MRI-CGCM2.3. We conducted pre-industrial and mid-Pliocene runs by using the coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model (AOGCM) and its atmospheric component (AGCM) for the PlioMIP Experiments 2 and 1, respectively. In addition, we conducted two types of integrations in AOGCM simulation, with and without flux adjustments on sea surface. General characteristics of differences in the simulated mid-Pliocene climate relative to the preindustrial in the three integrations are compared. In addition, patterns of predicted mid-Pliocene biomes resulting from the three climate simulations are compared in this study. Generally, difference of simulated surface climate between AGCM and AOGCM is larger than that between the two AOGCM runs, with and without flux adjustments. The simulated climate shows different pattern between AGCM and AOGCM particularly over low latitude oceans, subtropical land regions and high latitude oceans. The AOGCM simulations do not reproduce wetter environment in the subtropics relative to the present-day, which is suggested by terrestrial proxy data. The differences between the two types of AOGCM runs are small over the land, but evident over the ocean particularly in the North Atlantic and polar regions.
