“…2 We previously demonstrated that the co-infection with HHV-8 of HIV-1 positive patients can reduce not only B lymphocytes and CD4 T cells, but also CD8T cells. 3 Now we have studied the levels of some cytokines in the sera of 44 HIV-1 positive subjects, co-infected (24 individuals) or not co-infected with HHV-8 (20 individuals), in order to evaluate the role of HIV-1 infection and of HHV-8 co-infection in their production.…”

“…Human herpesvirus 7 (HHV‐7) is a T‐lymphotropic virus and a member of the beta‐human herpesvirus subfamily. It can cause a primary infection by the age of 3 years, persists lifelong as a latent infection with shedding of the infectious virus in saliva, and it may reactivate if conditions of altered immunity develop 7–11 . So far the portal entry of HHV‐7, the site of primary infection, the mechanism of latency, and its etiologic role in any disease have not yet been fully determined.…”

“…Recently, research has focused on HHV-6 and HHV-7. In most cases, after primary infection in early childhood, these viruses establish a latent infection in a specific set of cells of their host and are capable of reactivation in conditions of altered immunity [11]. They are widely encountered in the general adult population (80–90%).…”
