The neutrophil: A key resourceful agent in immune‐mediated vasculitis

Abstract: Neutrophils are no longer considered to be a highly differentiated and uniform population whose functions are solely confined to antimicrobial activities. This former restricted view of neutrophils as fixed effectors and that lack of plasticity was partly due to their characteristic short lifespan in circulation and very low transcriptional activity. 1-3 However, there has been increasing appreciation of the plasticity of neutrophils with the ongoing categorization of their subsets, including myeloid-derived s… Show more

“…Dysregulation in the phenotype and function of neutrophils has been recognized as key drivers in the onset and progression of BU pathogenesis 65 . Our work uncovered a stable unconventional neutrophil subset exhibiting a signature of type I Interferon responding pathway that was sex-specifically influenced during this disease.…”

“…Ayomonnier et al 20 provide a comprehensive and thought‐provoking overview of how the extraordinary versatility of neutrophils influences the behavior of other cells in the vessel wall and contributes to the initiation, maintenance, or both of inflammatory diseases in small, medium, or large vessels. The remarkable functional repertoire of neutrophils enables them to adapt to situations and modulate proinflammatory cells to suppress responses, drive fibrosis, promote thrombosis, or influence local vascular biology in other ways.…”

“…Ayomonnier et al 20 But beyond the obvious implications that reduced neutrophil functional capacity would have for host defense, the impact of the aging process is more pervasive. The authors discuss in detail the contribution of aged neutrophils, both acting alone and in critical interactions with macrophages, to atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, cerebral vascular insufficiency, neurodegenerative disease, and cancer-a spectrum both daunting and sobering.…”
