The nerve ring of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans: Sensory input and motor output

Abstract: The general organization and structure of the nerve ring, the main mass of central nervous system neuropil, in the small soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is described. The nerve ring receives sensory input from the anterior tip of the animal by means of six nerve bundles, all nerve fibers of which have centrally located cell bodies. The anterior sensory structures are classically divided into two types, papillary and amphidial, and are assumed responsible for mechano-and chemoreception, respectively. Papil… Show more

“…Those in the region of the inner labial neurons may correspond to the IL2 neurons, which, like the phasmid and dye-filling amphid neurons, are ciliated and are exposed to the environment (Ward et al 1975;Ware et al 1975). The pattern of expression of DYF-6TGFP appears to be a subset of that seen with OSM-6TGFP, which is expressed in nearly all (56 of 60) of the ciliated neurons of C. elegans (Collet et al 1998).…”

“…The microtubular axoneme in the middle segment consisted of a ring of nine doublet microtubules and up to six singlet microtubules ( Fig. 3D) (7,32,33). In the tip of the cilium the nine microtubules were all singlets ( Fig.…”

“…Such a dual function may provide a single-cell reflex loop: M3 may sense contraction of the pharynx and then command its relaxation. In addition to M3, several other pharyngeal neuron types (Albertson and Thomson, 1976) and at least one extrapharyngeal neuron type (Ward et al, 1975;Ware et al, 1975) have been proposed to have both sensory and motor roles based on anatomical data, so it is likely that other C.elegans neurons have dual physiological functions as proposed.…”
