In the cultural heritage preservation of medieval buildings, it is common to find plaster walls covered in lime, which previously were painted in polychromy. The conservation interventions usually try to remove the whitewash, whilst maintaining the original color of the painted wall as much as possible. However, there is no agreement on which cleaning technique best preserves the original appearance of the colored plaster. Different pigments found below the lime layer may behave differently depending on the cleaning technique used. Usually, colorimetric or photometric area-based measurements are carried out to study the color of the cleaned areas to compare with their original color, obtained from pre-made plaster probes. However, this methodology fails when the mean color difference is not enough to fully characterize the changes in texture and color appearance. This study presents a set of experiments carried out using two different pigments (cinnabar and malachite) covered with lime, and treated with nine different cleaning techniques on plaster probes prepared according to medieval techniques. We have studied the effect of the cleaning process on the color and the homogeneity of the samples using a hyperspectral imaging workflow. Four different analysis methods are presented and discussed. Our results show that the proposed analysis is able to provide a much more comprehensive and diversified characterization of the quality of the cleaning method compared to the commonly used colorimetric or photometric area-based measurements.

En esta línea se ha llevado a cabo la investigación de localización gráfica de alteraciones, estudio puntual de materiales de alteración y medición de parámetros ambientales (T y H) en las yeserías del Oratorio de la Madraza de Granada, espacio singular por sus antecedentes históricos y constructivos.Los resultados obtenidos determinan el nivel de alteración y presencia de los diferentes deterioros, así como la justificación de las causas de alteración que los han motivado. Igualmente se valida la metodología seguida en este estudio, consistente en diversos protocolos sucesivos que facilitan la determinación de las intervenciones restauradoras. ABSTRACT State of conservation studies carried out prior to rehabilitation and restorative interventions allow to act consistently on architectural heritage. This has been done in this research, graphic location of alterations, study of materials for alteration and measuring of environmental parameters (T and H) in the plasterwork of the Oratory of the Madrasah of Granada, singular space by their constructive and historical background. The results obtained determine the level of alteration and presence of different damages, as well as the justification of the causes of alteration to them have motivated. The methodology followed in this study, consisting of various successive protocols that facilitate the determination of restorative interventions is equally valid. Highlights: The photogrammetric survey demonstrates to be a potential tool in the preventive conservation of ancient plasterworks. The high-precision 3D model allows the study and quantification of alterations (e.g. fissures, deformations, and loss of mass or polychromies). The virtual model and the analysis performed with CloudCompare software provide fast, accurate and accessible results to experts in the field. Abstract: Previous studies and documentation about the state of conservation of architectural or decorative elements are crucial for heritage managers, technicians and researchers to succeed in the maintenance and preservation of the heritage. In this sense, hand tracings, digital drawings, or photographs have traditionally been the methods for alteration and sample mapping. In spite of their effectiveness, these methods have some disadvantages, such as the need for more precision in terms of location, dimensions, quantification and types of alterations. By contrast, high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) models allow us to analyse decorative ancient plasterworks with great precision, offering considerable advantages over traditional tools for heritage documentation. To facilitate stakeholders’ work and enhance the quality of data collected, this work proposes the use of photogrammetry as a tool for the documentation of polychromed ancient plasterworks, taking the upper frieze of the access door to the Charles V ceiling room in the Royal Alcazar of Seville as a case of study. Thus, the work methodology applied has shown several advantages over previous methods. On the one hand, it was possible to obtain a 2D planimetry from the 3D model; this is an essential step for those responsible for heritage, especially in reports prior to restoration interventions. On the other hand, the 3D model created enables present alterations identification, the location of fissures and cracks in their three dimensions (opening, length and depth), deformations measurement and control, the quantification of mass or polychrome loss, and the detached elements digital reconstruction. In this way, highprecision digital results are quickly obtained and accessible to all the experts involved in the heritage conservation and maintenance plan.
