Abstract:In the brain, Na+/H+ exchanger-1 (NHE-1) activation has a significant impact on ischemic injury, and, in recent studies, NHE-1 inhibition has been found to protect neurons from ischemic injury. This protective effect has been ascribed to the prevention of apoptosis, but neuronal cell death following ischemia is a consequence of both necrotic and apoptotic cell death. Here, we evaluated the ability of the potent NHE-1 inhibitor cariporide to prevent necrotic cell death in an in vitro model of excitotoxic neuron… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based startup that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
