The MUSICA IASI CH4 and N2O products and their comparison to HIPPO, GAW and NDACC FTIR references

Abstract: Abstract. This work presents the methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) products as generated by the IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) processor developed during the project MUSICA (MUlti-platform remote Sensing of Isotopologues for investigating the Cycle of Atmospheric water). The processor retrieves CH4 and N2O with different water vapour and water vapour isotopologues (as well as HNO3) and uses a single a priori data set for all the retrievals (no variation in space and time). Firstly, the… Show more

“…The benefit of this approach is a cancellation of multiplicative systematic error components (see, e.g., Wallace and Livingston, 1990;Yang et al, 2002;Wunch et al, 2010;Reuter et al, 2011). Similar arguments hold for isotopic ratios (e.g., Piccolo et al, 2009;Schneider et al, 2016) or ratios between trace gas profiles (e.g., García et al, 2018). For measurement techniques in the visible and UV, scattering is particularly important as it governs how long the actual light path is in each layer; accordingly, a certain amount of the target gas will have a stronger or weaker effect on the measured signal, depending in which layer it is.…”

“…Furthermore, the retrieval's spectral window contains spectroscopic features of CH 4 and N 2 O as well as weak spectroscopic features of HNO 3 and very weak spectroscopic features of CO 2 . All these trace gases are simultaneously fitted during the retrieval process, whereby the spectroscopic parameters are taken from the HITRAN 2016 database (Gordon et al, 2017) with small modifications for HDO parameters (similar to Schneider et al, 2016, the line intensity parameters of HDO have been increased by 10 %).…”
