Summary A total of 122 buffaloes and 14 native cattle were investigated. The thyroid iodine content of the complete intact glands was determined in relation to body weight, age, sex and at different reproductive phases. Marked individual variations were noticed in the values of body weight, thyroid weight and iodine content of the dry gland within each group of animals. The mean values of body weight, thyroid weight and iodine content were higher in buffaloes than in native cattle. The weight of buffalo thyroid and its iodine content were lower in the male than in the female. Furthermore, the thyroid weight and corresponding iodine content were notably higher during the follicular phase and late pregnancy than during the luteal phase and early pregnancy. The relation between body weight and fresh thyroid weight of the buffalo was significant within 3 groups only, i. e., males < 2 years old and non‐pregnant females during the luteal and follicular phases. Most of the animals with genital abnormalities other than cystic and inactive ovaries (low iodine content 2.3 mg/g. of dry tissue) show no deviation from the normal. Zusammenfassung Untersuchungen des Jodgehaltes der Schilddrüse bei Büffeln Der Jodgehalt der intakten Gesamt‐Schilddrüse wurde bei 122 Büffeln und 14 einheimischen Hausrindern bestimmt und in Relation zu Körpergewicht, Alter, Geschlecht und verschiedenen Fortpflanzungsstadien gebracht. Deutliche individuelle Unterschiede des Körpergewichtes, des Gewichtes der Schilddrüse und des Jodgehaltes der getrockneten Drüse konnten festgestellt werden. Das Mittel des Körpergewichtes, des Gewichtes der Schilddrüse und des Jodgehaltes war bei den Büffeln größer als bei den einheimischen Hausrindern. Das Gewicht der Schilddrüse und deren Jodgehalt waren bei den Büffelstieren kleiner als bei den Büffelkühen. Bei den letzteren waren die Werte im Stadium der Follikelreifung und der fortgeschrittenen Trächtigkeit höher als in der Lutealphase oder am Anfang der Trächtigkeit. Eine Abhängigkeit des Gewichtes der frischen Schilddrüse vom Körpergewicht war nur in drei Tiergruppen signifikant, und zwar bei jungen männlichen Tieren und bei den weiblichen während der Gelbkörper‐ und der Follikelreifungsphase. Die meisten Tiere mit Abnormitäten des Geschlechtsapparates, außer solche mit zystösen oder inaktiven Ovarien, zeigten keine Abweichung von den bei gesunden Tieren ermittelten Durchschnittswerten. Résumé Une étude sur la teneur en iode thyroïdien chez le buffle On examine au total 122 buffles et 14 bovins indigènes. On détermine la teneur en iode des thyroïdes complètes et intactes, en relation avec le poids du corps, l'âge, le sexe et à différentes phases de la reproduction. Key Word Index-Cerium(IV) N-bromosuccinimide; N-bromoacetamide; maleic acid; fumaric acid.Maleic acid (~IA) in aqueous sulfuric acid undergoes catalytic isomerization in the presence of small amounts of Cerium{IV) ion and N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) or N-bromoacetamide (NBA). The rate of isomerization is very fast even at room temperature and the yield is quite acceptable. The rate of isomerization depends on the relative amounts of ivlA, Ce(IV), NBS, NBA, and H,SO,. However, maleic acid has greater effect on the final yield. Sulfuric acid exhibits more chemica] effect than physical effects. The competitive redox reactions of Ce(l V), NBS, and NBA with MA limit the yield of isomerization to about 85;1':. In the vicinity of room temperature, a raise of five degrees in temperature nearly doubles the rate of isomerization. Acrylamide shows inhibitive effect on the isomerization. The rate of hydrolysis of NBS or NBA in aqueous acidic solution depends 011 the concentrations of hydrogen ion, and NBS or NBt'\. itself. The rate of hydrolysis of NBA is much faster than that of NBS. Mechanism involving bromine atom as ca tal yst is proposed to explain experimental results.
